Why Liberia? …. A Vision for A More Inclusive and Effective United Nations Security Council

The Republic of Liberia proudly announces its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the term 2026โ€”2027. This bid reflects Liberiaโ€™s unwavering commitment to global peace and security, particularly across Africa, and its enduring belief in multilateral cooperation as the cornerstone of international relations.

As a nation that has emerged from civil conflict to become a symbol of resilience and democratic renewal, Liberia brings a unique and powerful voice to the global stage. Liberia seeks to leverage its experience in conflict mediation, peacebuilding, and post-conflict reconstruction to support the Councilโ€™s mandate in addressing some of the worldโ€™s most pressing security challenges, especially those confronting Africa and the Sahel region.

Liberiaโ€™s candidacy is rooted in a call for greater equity and inclusivity within the Security Council. Despite Africaโ€™s vast population and its significant contribution to the United Nations, the continent remains underrepresented in both permanent and non-permanent categories. Liberia joins the growing chorus advocating for reforms that reflect todayโ€™s geopolitical realities, ensuring Africa has a stronger voice in global decision-making processes.

โ€œWe believe the Security Council must evolve to truly embody the principles of fairness and representativeness,โ€ said Foreign Minister Nyanti, โ€œand Liberia is ready to be a strong advocate for Africaโ€™s rightful place at the table.โ€

If elected, Liberia will use its platform to highlight critical issues affecting Africa and the wider world, including sustainable development, climate change, poverty eradication, and food security. Liberia will also support coordinated international efforts to combat terrorism, violent extremism, and organized crime challenges that disproportionately impact African communities.

Liberiaโ€™s painful past and hard-won progress have equipped the country with invaluable lessons in reconciliation, institution-building, and national healing. These insights can serve as a guiding light for nations facing similar trials. Liberia stands ready to share its experience and work collaboratively with international and regional partners to foster lasting peace and stability.

Liberia believes that no country can tackle todayโ€™s challenges alone. From pandemics and climate emergencies to displacement and armed conflict, collective action is essential. As a committed member of the international community, Liberia pledges to be a constructive, solutions-driven voice on the Security Council promoting diplomacy, dialogue, and development.

Liberiaโ€™s campaign is about more than a seat; it is about a vision for a Security Council that is more inclusive, more effective, and more reflective of the world it serves. It is a call to acknowledge and address historical imbalances, to empower regions historically marginalized, and to build a more just and peaceful global order.
