Statistics from the Monrovia Central Prison show that the facility is overcrowded with a total of 1,554 inmates as of Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The data, according to our judicial correspondent, put pretrial detainees at 1,096, covering males, followed by 35 females, 14 juvenile males, and one juvenile female.

The number of those convicted and sentenced for separate offenses is 458, with males topping the list with 440, followed by females with 17, juvenile males with one, and juvenile females with zero.
The inmates’ data also covered those detained for sexual gender-based violence, with 185 males and three females, putting the total at 188, while those convicted and sentenced for the same SGBV offenses are 26 males and females.
Our judicial correspondent further said that the data concluded with 27 males being slapped with life imprisonment, while those condemned are three.
Condemned means those that were convicted by death by hanging.
The Monrovia Central Prison, our judicial correspondent stated, was built for 370 inmates, but the latest statistics have proven a significant increase of 1,554 inmates in prison.
