Buchanan Open Bible Wins National High School Sports Tournament

The dust has settled on a week of intense football competition in Grand Bassa County, and Buchanan Open Bible High School stands tall as the champions of the National High School Sports Tournament.

In a highly anticipated grand final held on Friday afternoon at the Doris Williams Sports Stadium in Buchanan, Buchanan Open Bible High School delivered a commanding performance, defeating Gorblee High School with a convincing 3-0 scoreline.

The victory was spearheaded by a masterful performance from Forgive Brown, who netted a brace. Brown opened the scoring in the first half with a clinical finish and added his second midway through the second half, providing a significant boost to Open Bible’s momentum. The win was sealed late in the second half by the prolific Richmond Bleh, ensuring Buchanan Open Bible’s place, once again, in the annals of Grand Bassa school sports history.

Buchanan Open Bible’s triumph earned them the top prize of 20,000 Liberian Dollars, while Gorblee High School, as the runner-up, received 15,000 Liberian Dollars. However, the true impact of the tournament extends far beyond monetary rewards, inspiring students and communities throughout the county.

Organized by the National High School Sports, this year’s tournament brought together 12 accredited high schools from across Grand Bassa for a week of spirited competition. More than just a sporting event, it served as a vibrant celebration of youth, sportsmanship, and community unity.

The National High School Sports Organization has a history of utilizing sports to promote educational goals, having hosted the first-ever countrywide high school football and kickball championship in 2017, which included over 150 Ministry of Education-sanctioned high schools and aimed to increase school enrollment.

Buchanan Open Bible’s dominance throughout the tournament was undeniable. They won all four of their matches, culminating in their powerful 3-0 victory over Gorblee in the final. This win held particular significance, as Gorblee had previously faced Open Bible in the quarterfinals and re-entered the competition as the “best loser.” Despite this second chance, Open Bible once again demonstrated their superior form.

With this hard-fought victory, Open Bible High School will now proudly represent Grand Bassa County in the upcoming Regional County Playoffs, with aspirations of bringing even greater glory to their school and county.
