Members of the House of Representatives overwhelmingly reaffirmed their November 21, 2024 decision by electing Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon as Speaker of the House of Representatives of the 55th Legislature on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, in open plenary.
The reaffirmation and election come in the wake of the official resignation of Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa as Speaker—a decision acknowledged by the plenary as being in the best interest of the country and its people. Consequently, the House announced on Monday, May 12, 2025, that a fresh election would be conducted the following day.
In a free, fair, and transparent democratic process held in plenary, Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, Representative of Montserrado County District #11, secured 43 votes, defeating Nimba County Electoral District #7 Representative, Hon. Musa Hassan Bility, who received 26 votes. Following the results, Speaker Koon was immediately sworn into office by Deputy Speaker Hon. Thomas P. Fallah, in the presence of fellow lawmakers.
In his acceptance remarks, Speaker Koon expressed deep appreciation to his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him. He vowed to prioritize unity within the House, foster stronger legislative collaboration, and maintain a people-centered approach to governance.
“As we resume the 2nd Quarter of the 2nd Session, our focus must be on delivering tangible results for the Liberian people,” Speaker Koon stated.
The Press Bureau extends legislative greetings and reiterates the commitment of the 55th Legislature to promoting transparency, accountability, and national development through responsible lawmaking and inclusive leadership.
